Sedona History

Native American

The Yavapai and Apache tribes were taken away from the Verde Valley in 1876, to the San Carlos Indian Reservation, 180 miles southeast.  Around 200 Yavapai and Apache tribe members went back to the Verde Valley in 1900.

The Settlers

The very first settler migrated into Oak Creek Canyon in 1876. The first settlers were farmers and ranchers. Oak Creek Canyon was popular for its apple and peach orchards. In 1902, upon the establishment of the Sedona post office, there were 55 residents. By the mid-1950s, the first phone book had 155 names. Portions of the Sedona area did not have electricity until the 1960s.

In the 1950s, Sedona developed into a holiday destination, vacation home, and retirement living hub. The majority of the growth seen at present was built during the 1980s and 1990s. By 2007, there weren’t any large parcels of undeveloped acreage remaining.  Sedona is fortunate to be surrounded by the National Forest.

Two Counties

Uptown Sedona, the Gallery District, and Little Horse Park aka the Chapel area are entirely in Coconino County.  Along with West Sedona (in Yavapai County) together form the City of Sedona. Initially founded in 1902, it was incorporated into a city in January 1988. The unincorporated Village of Oak Creek, (VOC) & Big Park, 7 miles towards the south are beyond the Sedona city limits, yet is a substantial portion of the Sedona community.
